Japan - 'A view from afar' 2023
Project Type
Pencil, Pigma Micron ink pens, Holbein watercolour
Date
Completed January 2024
Duration
Approximately 200 hours
This picture is #4 in the journey.
I was all ready to go to Japan in 2021, then COVID hit.
I have still not been to Japan but find the culture fascinating.
This picture features some older established restaurants, every building is an actual building in Japan, mostly Tokyo. The Nakagin Capsule tower was demolished in late 2022 but I like the concept and it was certainly a standout piece of architecture, so I put it in.
The detailed section also includes Ebisu East Gallery, and I thought the way the architect (Kochi Architect Studio) has designed the building is brilliant and fits with the theme of adding cutaways to my pictures.
This picture is a bit different to #2 (Melbourne, Australia) and #3 (London) as I wanted to give the viewer a few different perspectives and not just present everything in isometric. Rather than have one picture, I went for a group of linked pictures that form one picture and then measured out the framing for each picture to align to the 'golden ratio'
You will notice that the original picture has a Toyota in the top left corner, it's a representation of the first production Toyota, the border will be finished, but I thought it detracted from the main group of pictures, so I have decided to crop it prior to printing.
There will be a few variations of the picture:
1. The complete picture - Japan from afar - minus the border,
2. A section - The detailed isometric left-hand side of the complete picture which will be suitable for a square frame
3. A section - The top right dual perspective city view with train crossing river - Square
4. A section - The bottom middle Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine - Square
